Mathematics Rocks at Dulwich College, Suzhou!

Congratulations to our talented mathematicians on an incredible debut at the High School Team Maths (HSTM) competition held at Dulwich College, Suzhou! In our first year sending High School teams to this prestigious and established Math contest, Concordia students demonstrated exceptional skill, teamwork, and problem-solving prowess. Competing against 40 teams from 17 schools across 11 cities all over Asia, our students navigated six rigorous rounds, including the Mathematician; a round so difficult that even AI couldn’t answer the questions, Shuttle; a team effort using the previous teammate’s answer to inform the next question, Duel; a strategy based mathematical game, Crypto; testing encryption as well as mathematical topics, Lightning; an exciting and energetic math relay race, and Codebreaking; a super tricky pattern-spotting round. All of this mathematical fun was alongside a unique "Maths Trail" at Suzhou’s Botanical Gardens and a lecture from a real-life university Math professor, Ron Lancaster from the University of Toronto! It was a great to see Mathematics all around us at the gardens, and some “amazing moments” from Ron as he shared his experiences of falling in love with Math.
The results were spectacular: one of our teams, Sequential Analysis, secured a remarkable third place finish overall. Warren He and Alex Wang both received awards for the highest scores in grade 9/year 10 and grade 10/year 11 respectively. This is super impressive, especially considering it was their first time participating, as many participants return to take part each year. Furthermore, the performance across the board was so strong that all three of our participating teams have qualified for the World Mathematics Championships (WMC). This "Silver Ticket" grants them entry into the WMC finals held at Imperial College London this June and July. This is a highly prestigious event that brings together the finest young mathematical minds from around the globe, and we are immensely proud of our students for reaching this international stage. We look forward to cheering them on as they represent Concordia in London!
